Prostate and Its Related Problems
A part of the male reproductive organ, the prostate is a gland located between the bladder and the penis. A vital gland, it is responsible for carrying out two main functions in the male body. These functions include urination and to produce a major portion of seminal fluids that carry sperm.
However, for a gland that is just about the size of a walnut, it sure can be a major cause of health concerns. Prostate problems are extremely common in older men. While prostate cancer is one of the common medical conditions in older men, having issues with this gland does not always mean cancer and therefore apart from this condition, there are two other common problems relating to this gland. These problems include:
Prostatitis- It is usually determined by a red and swollen (inflamed) gland. Some of the other significant symptoms that are usually accompanied by this problem include pelvic and testicular pain, pain during urination (though it is more likely to be a symptom of urinary tract infection), pain while ejaculating and pain in the perineum (the area between the anus and the back of the scrotum). This condition can affect the prostate health of men at any age, however it is more likely to impact those falling between the ages 30 and 50.
Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) - This condition is a non-cancerous enlargement of this otherwise tiny gland. According to the NHS, almost one-third of men over 50 years of age will suffer with symptoms of this condition. This condition can affect the normal pattern of urination considering the fact that since the urethra (though which urine flows) goes through the prostate to the end of the penis, an enlarged form of this gland can put pressure on urethra making it difficult for the bladder to empty. Some of the potential ways this condition can affect your otherwise normal pattern of urination include: difficulty in starting urination, interrupted urine flow and causing you to urinate more frequently, especially throughout the night.
Fortunately, there are treatments available that can relieve you of the symptoms relating to affected prostate health, what is important however is choosing the most appropriate and safe to use solutions.
